The Phantom of the Opera

Directed by Rupert Julian and several others | 1925 | Horror, Silent Film | 1h 47m

A must-see classic vintage horror movie for all TPOTO fans which was based on the famous novel by Gaston Leroux. I haven’t yet seen it but I have it on my must-watch list as I loved the book! By the way, another quick but not-so-vintage recommendation for all Phantom fans is Charles Dance’s “The Phantom of the Opera”. Dance’s Phantom is far more sarcastic, dramatic, and humorous, so the series were a lot of fun to watch.

Creature from the Black Lagoon

Directed by Jack Arnold | 1954 Adventure, Horror | 1h 20m

Scientists discover a fossilized webbed hand so they go on an expedition to find the remainder of the fossil. What they don’t know is that this fossilized specimen is not the only one of its kind. The creature from the Black Lagoon is highly curious as to what these people are doing in its territory, so it stalks and attacks them.

The underwater scenes were so beautiful I would give this film 10/10 donuts for that alone, especially considering the time period in which it was shot. Though I must say, there were several things that confused me, like the fact that the pretty girl’s only purpose was to get abducted by the creature, or that she changed outfits at least three times a day, which is weird because they were in the middle of the Amazon river!

The Brides of Dracula

Directed by Terence Fisher | 1960 | Horror | 1h 25m

A young governess is on her way to take up an employment position in Transylvania but ends up in a small village instead. There she accepts the offer of shelter from some Baroness Meinster, and soon meets her son who she keeps locked in his room. After helping him escape, the girl realizes the evil she has committed and runs away. Thing is, the Baroness’ vampire son soon finds her and wants her to be his bride. Thankfully, Van Helsing is nearby and he’ll save the day!

House of Usher

Directed by Roger Corman | 1960 | Horror | 1h 19m

A young man named Philip travels to the House of Usher to meet his fiancée Madeline. However, her brother opposes the marriage as he believes that the Usher bloodline is cursed. Although the two lovers want to run away, fate thinks otherwise and sad things happen to them. Is the Usher bloodline really cursed, or is it all just Madeline’s brother’s imagination?

Night of the Living Dead

Directed by George A. Romero | 1968 | Drama, Sci-Fi, Horror | 1h 37m

Two siblings, Barbra and Johnny, visit their father’s grave where a strange man attacks them and kills Johnny. Barbra escapes and finds a farmhouse, though zombies soon start attacking it. Thankfully, some random guy helps her secure the house against the rotten attackers. The zombie apocalypse has started and they have to find a way to get to safety before they’ve been turned or eaten alive!

The Last House on the Left

Directed by Wes Craven | 1972 | Slasher, Mystery, Horror | 1h 57m

According to Wikipedia, it’s a gruesome film about the horrendous torture and death of two teenage girls, and parents’ revenge on their child’s killers. Personally, I haven’t seen it because I generally hate films that involve sadism of any kind, but I do know that this is a cult classic and a generally well-liked slasher among the fans of said genre. (Read the film’s description on Google or IMDb before watching it to make sure it doesn’t traumatize you too much.)

The Exorcist

Directed by William Friedkin | 1973 | Mystery, Supernatural Horror | 2h 15m

The classic vintage horror film follows a famous fictional actress’ daughter Regan whose behaviour changes rapidly after she plays with a Ouija board. At first, her mother assumes it’s just her being a teenager, though after witnessing Regan’s abnormal strength and inhumane noises, she involves both doctors and the church to help get rid of whatever is troubling her daughter.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Directed by Tobe Hooper | 1974 | Thriller, Horror | 1h 30m

A group of young adults travel through the middle of nowhere and have a scary run-in with a hitchhiker. As they continue on their journey, they end up meeting the good ol’ Leatherface and his equally insane family who slaughter them all. (Well, almost all of them.) By the way, did you know that the character of Leatherface and a few minor plot details were inspired by the infamous murderer Ed Gein?…

Jaws

Directed by Steven Spielberg | 1975 | Drama, Horror | 1h 30m

After a young woman’s remains are washed ashore, a medical examination proves that she was killed by a shark. Some fishermen manage to catch a tiger shark near the local beach, but the killings soon resume as the real killer shark wasn’t caught.

Truth be told, the statistical probability of a shark attack is 1 in 3,748,067, while the odds of a car accident are 1 in 84, not to mention the odds of developing heart disease, which are 1 in 5. So don’t be afraid of sharks, it’s more likely that you’ll die of a stroke! (Morbid, isn’t it?)

Alien

Directed by Ridley Scott | 1979 | Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror | 1h 57m

The film that changed science fiction, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” is sure to make you question whether we’re the only sentient beings in the Universe. In 2122, the crew of a commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep to investigate a signal from an alien spaceship. Inside it, they find a nest of eggs that they’ve never seen before, so they decide to take some for samples. Unfortunately, no one on the ship could predict what beings would spring out of those eggs.
