CRIME SHOWS FOR DARK EVENINGS // Blood Red GRWM

Hey!

Autumn Mondays are often the toughest days to push through, so I wanted to start a new series to cheer you up! Every Monday in October I’ll be here to share a fun makeup look and TV show recommendations, scary stories, or other types of content that’ll keep you entertained on these dreary evenings. Today I wanted to talk about five crime shows I haven’t mentioned all that much, and I paired them with a blood red eyeshadow tutorial!

Check out my Instagram @xocaligobeauty for more lifestyle and beauty content! This week I’ve decided to start a new theme, which will be prettier and more makeup-based, so stay tuned for new photos.

Hannibal

Crime, Psychological Thriller // 2013-2015

Before I talk about how awesome this TV show is, I have to warn you that it’s as gruesome as it is artistic, and trust me, it’s a masterpiece of cinematography. Based on Thomas Harris’ novel “Red Dragon”, the series follow the cannibalistic murderer Dr Hannibal Lecter, and Will Graham, an FBI profiler who’s trying to catch him. After their joint friend Jack Crawford asks Hannibal to monitor Will’s well-being during crime solving, the two develop an unusal friendship.

The TV show portrays Hannibal as a polite, controlled, and slightly reserved aristocrat who loves to cook and throw dinner parties; his ruthless side comes out only when he attacks his victims. I hadn’t seen any of the Hannibal Lecter movies before watching the show, and after seeing The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Hannibal (2001), I can honestly say that the order doesn’t matter. There are noticeable differences between movies and the TV series, however, both forms of media compliment each other. The biggest difference is that Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal is more bold and outwardly insane because he’s been captured, while Mads Mikkelsen’s character has to conceal his true self as he has yet to be apprehended.

So far Hannibal has only three seasons, however, there are talks about a potential fourth season! Let’s hope that it happens soon.

Mindhunter

Crime // 2017-?

The show is set in late 70s and early 80s, and follow three FBI Behavioural Science Unit agents who conduct interviews with imprisoned serial killers. Throughout the show we get to see the beginnings of modern FBI criminal psychology and profiling, as well as a shift in how law enforcement views violent offenders. There are several scenes that were harder to watch, mostly because they included descriptions of crimes commited by Ed Kemper, David Berkowitz, Charles Manson, and several others. That being said, I highly recommend this show to all true crime and detective show fans!

I’ve heard rumours that the producers might release at least one other season, and I honestly wish they did. Have you seen Mindhunter? If so, what did you think of it?

Poirot

Crime, Drama, Mystery // 1989-2013

Agatha Christie is one of my favourite detective novel authors, so I have to give a shout-out to the show that’s inspired by her books, Poirot! The series follow the eccentric, witty, and often snobbish Belgian detective Hercule Poirot who solves crimes using deduction and his sharp observation skills. Just like Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, this show also takes place nearly a hundred years ago in 1930s Britain, and it’s aesthetically pleasing for everyone who loves vintage style and older crime shows!

Rizzoli & Isles

Crime, Drama // 2010-2016

If you’re a supporter of girlpower, this crime show is for you! Rizzoli & Isles follows two polar opposites, BPD detective Jane Rizzoli and Chief Medical Examiner Dr.Isles, who work together to solve crimes in Boston, Massachusetts. Since they’re best friends, in nearly all episodes they support each other through tough situations, have fun at a bar where Jane’s mum works as a waitress, or hang out at each other’s homes and talk about their personal lives!

If you find yourself becoming addicted to this show, don’t worry! These series have 100+ nearly hour-long episodes, so you’ll have something to watch for at least a few months.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

Crime, Mystery, Comedy // 2012-2015

Picture it: Melbourne, 1920s. A glamorous and determined private detective, Miss Phryne Fisher, returns home after spending several years abroad. Soon after, she’s presented with new cases that take her to cocaine smuggling rings, alchemy, love affairs, and the man who’s responsible for her sister’s death.

I really love the costumes and the set design of this show; it’s so glamorous that I want to redecorate my whole apartment to match Miss Fisher’s home!

✨ blood red makeup ✨

The common denominator between all of these shows is murder, therefore I wanted to create a blood red eyeshadow look that will hypnotize anyone who looks you in the eyes. This is also a great mask-wearer makeup look, as you don’t need to apply any face or lip makeup unless you want to!

Products used:

  • Rival de Loop Eyebrow Pen in 02 Brown
  • Revolution Precise Brow Pencil in Light Brown
  • H&M High Impact Eye Colour “In The Red”
  • Revolution Reloaded Newtrals 2 shadow palette
  • Wycon Ink Liner
  • RdeL Young Hypnotic Look Eye Lashes
  • Essence Get BIG! Lashes Volume Curl Mascara
  • Essence Correct to Perfect CC concealer palette in 10 nobody is perfect!
  • Catrice Nude Illusion Transparent Matt Loose Powder
  • Catrice All Matt Plus Shine Control Make Up in 010 Light Beige
  • Catrice Liquid Camouflage concealer 010 Porcellain
  • Essence Matt Touch Blush in 20 berry me up!
  • Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter in Peach Lights
  • Revolution Pro Fix Amazing Makeup Fixing Spray
  • Wycon Matt Sublime Lipstick in 623 Almond

Step 1: Fill in your eyebrows like you usually would. Prime your eyelids with concealer, then use the same product to “carve” your brows. After that, I applied a matte beige shadow (nr.6) all over the eyelids to make blending eyeshadow easier. (If you have a deeper skin tone than me, use any matte eyeshadow that’s a shade or two lighter than your skin tone.)

Step 2: Place pieces of sticky tape at the outer corners of your eyes, and blend the brightest red eyeshadow you own in the crease. Blend the outer edge towards your brows using a clean, fluffy blending brush.

Step 3: Deepen the crease with a red wine colour (nr.5), then apply the same shade all over the moving lid. Use the fluffy blending brush to blend the two crease colours together, and eventually you’ll see a red gradient from deeper to lighter shades!

Step 4: Spritz setting spray on the bristles of a flat concealer brush, dip it in a rosegold shimmer (nr.8), and apply the shadow all over your moving lid. As that’s done, use your fingertip to gently pat a champagne shade (nr.12) on the middle of the lid.

Step 5: Apply winged liner of your preference, a few coats of mascara, and throw on massive fake lashes. Before finishing the eyes, apply the rest of your face makeup if you haven’t done that already, or sweep away any eyeshadow dust that might’ve fallen on your cheeks.

Step 6: Finish the eye look by applying a rusty red eyeshadow (nr.15) all over the lower lash line, placing it as close to your lashes as possible. Blend a bit of the deep wine shade on the outer corners, then highlight the inner corners and brow bone with a pink-toned face highlighter!

The only problem I have with this look is that the fake lashes are glued to a white band! I didn’t notice that before putting them on, and since the glue they came with is black, I thought there would be no issues. From now on I’ll have to remember to colour the lash band with liquid eyeliner!

I’m already working on a few other posts like this one, but I’m still open for suggestions! #QOTD: Are there any topics and/or makeup looks you’d like to see next? Leave a comment, I’d love to hear your thoughts! ♥

Until later,
