ENCANTO (2021) review // Movies & Makeup #5

Hey!

Happy Valentine’s day, my loves! I hope it’s a good one, no matter your relationship status. Today I wanted to share my thoughts on the ultra-popular Disney movie – Encanto, and give you an idea for a very colourful eyeshadow look.

Encanto

Musical, Fantasy, Comedy // 2021 // 1 h 42 min

Encanto was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer. The movie is about the magical Madrigal family and their unresolved issues, as well as transgenerational trauma, which threatens to strip them of their magic.

Plot description: SPOILERS AHEAD!

After some tragic events, Alma Madrigal is granted a magical candle that builds a house for her family (Casita), along a magical place surrounded by tall mountains – the Encanto. The magic candle burns forever and grants magic to each Madrigal descendant.

However, not all magic serves the family. Nobody talks about Bruno – Alma’s vilified son who has a gift of foreknowledge that has caused trouble. Another black sheep is Mirabel, Alma’s granddaughter, who didn’t receive a gift at all.

During family celebrations, the whole family pushes away Mirabel. As she leaves the party, she sees cracks in Casita’s walls and the magical forever-burning candle’s flame flickers, but no one else sees the damage. Mirabel goes on a mission to save the magic and learns upsetting things from one of Bruno’s hidden prophecies.

Mirabel’s sister Isabela is having an engagement party which goes awry when everyone’s powers get out of control. Running away from the chaos, Mirabel finds Bruno, who reveals that the vision isn’t set in stone; it’s up to Mirabel to heal or destroy the magic. Upon Mirabel’s request, Bruno has another vision, where they see Mirabel hugging someone who looks like Isabela, with whom Mirabel has a tense relationship.

As Mirabel tries to make peace with Isabela, she learns that Isabela doesn’t want to get married: she’s doing it because of the pressure placed on her. Alma confronts Mirabel for ruining the family because of her jealousy, but Mirabel fires back, saying that Alma ruined the family with the pressure she places on everybody.

The argument ruins the Casita, and the magical flame goes out in Mirabel’s hands. While everyone else looks around at the ruins, Mirabel flees the town. Eventually, Alma finds Mirabel, and the two reconcile. The family reunites and rebuilds the house. Mirabel is the one to restore its magic.

End of description.

I loved the musical score, discussions about transgenerational trauma, and the pretty accurate representation of the pressures many of us feel in our daily lives.

I ain’t gonna lie – I nearly cried during the “Surface Pressure” song as I could relate to it a bit too much! Also, I think many of us will relate to Alma passing her trauma onto her kids (and grandkid’s) through constant criticism, demands to make sacrifices for the family, and impossible standards. At first, her behaviour doesn’t strike you as abusive because she never seems malicious, but by the end of the movie, it’s hard to miss. (Or maybe I’m just used to that as most grandmas and mums I’ve known act like that.) But then we learn why she behaves like that, and in the end, she acknowledges her behaviour and decides to change. Through her healing, the whole family can heal and grow happy – to me, that seems like a wholesome message to end the movie!

Besides the darker, deeper stuff, I have to mention the stunning visuals and colours of the movie; I wish I could live in a place as beautiful as Casita or wear such pretty dresses!

Surprisingly enough, there wasn’t anything I disliked about the movie!

Sure, most of the plot was quite predictable, but the movie was still enjoyable enough. Knowing the audience it was made for, I think it’s a great movie for the whole family! Who knows, maybe it’ll lead to conversations between family members and friends and improve more relationships!

Would I recommend watching Encanto?

Yes, I undoubtedly recommend watching Encanto, no matter who you are! It’s a lovely movie that deals with issues many people are all too familiar with, and it does so in a delicate manner. It shows that there’s usually a reason behind people’s actions and that sometimes all you need is honesty and willingness to improve to save an existing relationship.

✨ Encanto-inspired eyeshadow look ✨

It’s been a while since I played with bright shadows, and Encanto is the inspiration I needed!

1. I filled in my brows with some brow pomade and brushed my brows with a clean spoolie to remove excess product. (If you want to do lighter brows, use powder or gel products.) I cleaned up around them with some skin-toned concealer and patted a cream coloured eyeshadow beneath the brows to ease blending later down the line. Use any colour eyeshadow that is a shade or two lighter than your skin tone!

2. Prime the eyelids with the same concealer and apply a matte bright pink eyeshadow right in the crease using a dense blending brush. Blend the colour towards your brows in a shape that you like! (I chose to do a round shape because it suits my eyes.) Blend the same colour on the lower lid, too! (I used the pink shade next to the yellow colour from the Sleek palette.)

3. Use a flat brush and apply concealer all over the moving lid. If you have a monolid, go high enough to see the concealer line when your eyes are open.

4. If you have a pigmented gold liner, avoid this step and apply the gold liner between the crease and the lid shade (once you’ve applied both, of course). If you, like me, don’t have such a liner, carry on with this step!

Pick up some warm gold glitter shadow with a slanted eyebrow brush, and apply it on the concealer right along the edge where it meets the pink shadow. It’ll be a barrier between the crease and the lid shades and look oh-so-pretty!

5. Let’s apply the lid shades! At first, I used the bright blue from the Sleek palette on the inner parts of the eyelid, which I paired with the deep violet shade from the NYX palette on the outer parts of the eye. I blended the violet into the blue to create a seamless transition. Since the blue was too deep, I applied a duochromatic blue shimmer from the Essence palette on top of it! (A small amount of white highlighter would give a similar vibe!)

6. Lastly, I created two massive wings and applied some mascara. You can also throw on fake lashes – I wear glasses, so I tend to avoid them. 😀 Finish the look by applying face makeup and some white highlighter on the inner corners of your eyes, as well as your brow bones!

  1. This is a very pretty eyelook, very colorful, but it still looks great together, it didn’t become overwhelming. Love how detailed it is. 🌈

I saw the movie, but it’s definitely one I’m going to watch again. Surface pressure was great, but I also teared up during Waiting on a Miracle.

    • Thank you so much!
And same, that song and “What else can I do?” also made me a tad misty eyed. Disney does a good job at tugging at people’s heartstrings!
