BAD MOON RISING // rich gold smoky eye with winged liner
Hey!
Bad Moon Rising is one of my favourite songs that I love to listen to throughout the year. It’s not exactly a Halloween song but it definitely has dark and moody lyrics, so I think it fits the October aesthetic quite well. Today’s makeup look features lots of earthy tones, natural eyebrows, and massive wings that pull the look together. Anyways, I hope you’ll find this post inspirational, informative, or at least entertaining to swipe through! 🙂
As always, I must plug my Instagram profile @xocaligo. I post mainly beauty and lifestyle photos, but I also like to share some random photos of my cats and stuff that happens behind-the-scenes.
BAD MOON RISING
Bad Moon Rising is a rather old song but I absolutely love it. I don’t have a favourite version, though I know that the original by Creedence Clearwater Revival is more upbeat than most of the covers I’ve heard.

PICTORIAL with descriptions
Another day, another makeup look! Today I wanted to play with light and shadows, so I created this smoky eye that reminds me of lightning, moonlight, and biker chicks.
1. Prime your eyelids and apply the first eyeshadows.
I primed my eyelids with the Revolution and Essence concealers; I mixed a bit of the purple and green colour-correctors with a tan concealer to ensure that the shade mix fits my skin tone. After that, I applied a matte cream shadow beneath my brows using a flat concealer brush, and blended a light matte caramel shade in the crease using a fluffy blending brush.
Sidenote: This time I’m not starting with my eyebrows, though you could totally do them first.
2. Create the shading around your eyes!
I used a small, dense blending brush to apply a matte chocolate shade on the inner and outer parts of my eyes. I blended the edges with a fluffy blending brush, and reapplied the shade until I was satisfied with its intensity. Leave the middle parts of your top and bottom lids bare as that’s where the accent shade will go.
3. Apply the base for the accent shadow.
I applied the cream eyeshadow on the bare parts of my eyelids without blending the outer edges. The cream eyeshadow provides a good base for any metallic shades and makes them “pop”, and they will also last much longer than without a sticky base. I used a bronze shadow stick I’m trying to finish off, but you could use any other cream eyeshadow for this job, just make sure it’s quite light and shiny.
4. Add the golden accents!
Spray a clean flat concealer brush with some setting spray, dip it into a warm gold metallic eyeshadow, and tap it on top of the base you applied in the previous step. I used the shade called Contest from the Revolution palette, but I also topped it with a bit of Hot Mess right in the middle of the gold as it needed a bit of extra shine and dimension. (Hot Mess is a light, cool-toned metallic gold; if you don’t have a similar shade, you can use a gold highlighter instead.)
5. Eyebrows & final touches.
I coloured in the tails of my brows using the matte taupe eyeshadow, then filled in the rest using the brow mascara. This time I was a bit messy, so I had to clean up around the brows with concealer.
The last few steps involve applying black pencil liner in the waterline and drawing on wings of your preferred thickness. Also, apply a few coats of mascara on both top and bottom lashes and, if you want, you could also put on some fake eyelashes.
Another step that will elevate your eye makeup look is how you apply your undereye concealer. I like to apply a few dots of concealer below the eyes, then use a brush or the tip of a fingertip to lightly blend some of the product upwards, going over the eyeshadow just a little bit to make sure that the transition between skin and eyeshadow looks seamless.
FINISHED LOOK
I tried to channel my feelings towards Bad Moon Rising into a makeup look, and I felt myself reaching for rich earthy tones. I considered creating a red look, but then I thought about how much this song reminds me of nightly walks and I figured a gold smoky eye would be more fitting.
QOTD: Do you like creating darker makeup looks during autumn and winter months? I love wearing different eyeshadow looks when it’s cold outside as my makeup doesn’t melt away! ♥
Until later,

Oh I love Bad Moon Rising – although I have to admit, I like the cover by Mourning Rituals a LOT more than the original.
And it’s quite funny, I also did a gold look today, I used a Catrice palette. Yours looks a lot more professional and complicated than mine, I really gotta start trying to do more complicated looks.
Yes! I couldn’t remember what the cover artist was so I didn’t mention it, but that is also my favourite!
And I’m sure your makeup look was lovely, don’t talk yourself down like that! Any skills can be sharpened through practice, and makeup practice is a lot of fun to do. 💕
