FRIGHT NIGHT double feature: 1985 vs 2011 // Movies & Makeup #3

Hey!

Last few weeks were quite hectic but I’m finally getting into a routine that works for me. Today I wanted to offer y’all a double feature movie review of Fright Night, as well as a pretty dramatic eyeshadow look for this fall and winter season. This is the last horror movie review for the upcoming month or so, but I am planning to review four or five film noir movies during November! Do you have any film noir recommendations? Because if you do, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

IMPORTANT! This review contains a rendition of the plot and lots of spoilers, as well as mentions of murder, assault, and sexual themes, so read this at your own risk.

Fright Night

Horror, Comedy // 1985 // 1 h 46 min

The original version of Fright Night was written and directed by Tom Holland (not the one who played Spider-Man) and stars William Ragsdale as Charley Brewster, a young guy who discovers his next-door-neighbourgh Jerry (played by Chris Sarandon) is a vampire. He’s the only one who can stop the vicious vampire, but not without the help of a famous TV vampire hunter Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall). The film is a cult classic, and has both sequels and remakes to chill you during the dreary autumn and winter evenings!

Plot description: SPOILERS AHEAD!

A teenager named Charley notices something strange about his new neighbours, so he begins observing them from his bedroom window. After a while, he realizes that he lives next to vampires who are behind the recent mysterious murders, but no one believes him.

Stuff happens, and Charley’s mum invites the vampire, Jerry, inside their home, and now he can get inside Charley’s place whenever he wants to. After a particularly unfortunate encounter with Jerry, Charley grows obsessed with vampire lore and visits a popular TV vampire hunter Peter Vincent for help on his vampire hunt.

Charley’s friends grow concerned about his obsession with vampires and his new neighbours, so they convince Peter to accompany them on a visit to Jerry’s house. The group do just that, but the attempt to convince Charley goes wrong aftert Peter sees proof that Jerry is, in fact, a vampire.

Afterwards, Charley walks his friends to their homes, but his best friend Ed gets intercepted by Jerry. Soon Charely and his girlfriend are also ambushed by the blood-sucking predator, and he kidnaps the girl. Completely distraught, Charley finally convinces Peter to hunt down the vampire and put an end to its reign of terror.

From then on, they have several battles with the vampire and its subjugates, and they seemingly destroy the vampire’s nest. All ends well, but there’s still a possibilty someone’s still inside the spooky house next door.

End of description.

I can’t say it’s my all-time favourite movie, however, it was a lot of fun to watch.

The writing was decent, albeit predictable, and it was quite easy to empathize with the characters and immerse yourself in the movie universe. The movie had lots of those cheesy 80s special effects like juicy skeletons and random puffs of smoke, but it kinda brought me back to my childhood when I watched loads of 80s and 90s movies.

Would I recommend watching Fright Night (1985)?

Yes, but only if you like cheesy 80s horror. The movie was quite predictable, but it was also nostalgic and fit the whole “stormy night, fuzzy blanket, scary movie” aesthetic. I can’t say I’d watch it again any time soon, though I do suggest watching it at least once in your life since it is a cult classic. Also, it could also be a good gateway horror movie for those who get scared easily, since it’s not as creepy as most modern movies and you can easily predict what will happen next.

Fright Night

Horror, Comedy // 2011 // 2 h

The remake of Fright Night was directed by Craig Gillespie and stars Anton Yelchin as Charley Brewster, a terrified, yet determined teenage boy, and Collin Farrel as Jerry Dandridge, a cunning and manipulative vampire. The remake follows the original storyline quite closely, except here the Charley reaches out to a TV magician (David Tennant) and the characters interact with the vampire more. There are enough differences between the movies, so it should be fun to watch even if you’ve seen the original movie also took some liberties.

Charley’s friend Ed investigates his best friend’s new neighbour and suspects that he’s a vampire. Soon after he argues with Charley and goes missing, which leads to Charley following Ed’s investigation and coming to the same conclusions.

He decides to break into the vamp’s house to find some evidence; stuff happens, and he goes home empty-handed. After that, Charley grows obsessed with vampires and everyone around him grows concerned for his well-being. He even reaches out to this TV magician / vampire hunter but gets shushed away.

The vampire pays a visit to Charley, and after not being let in, he does things to lure the kid and his loved ones outside. First battle ensues, after which his mum ends up in the hospital, and the kid and his girlfriend pay another visit to the TV magician.

While they are chatting with the magician dude, the now-vampire Ed visits them and they run away. The magician somehow survives as he’s actually a real vampire hunter, but the kids aren’t so lucky. The vampire finds them in the party they tried to hide in, and he seduces the girl to have her follow him home. The kid and the magician team up to kill the vampire, and some boss-battles later everything goes back to normal.

End of description.

I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie, and how strangely unpredictable was its plot.

There were some plot twists that really took me off-guard and made me jump, and the two hours flew by without me noticing that so much time has already passed. I can imagine watching it many times, especially when I’m having an off-day and all I want to do is eat snacks and chill out. The special effects were quite good, and the makeup of the Charley’s girlfriend when she was turned into a vampire was truly terrifying!

Would I recommend watching Fright Night (2011)?

Yes, absolutely! It was a fun movie to watch, and while there were predictable moments, I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes vampires, plot twists, and good looking actors.

✨ berry-toned eyes & winged liner ✨

None of the makeup looks shown in either of the Fright Night movies spoke to me, and since I was in the mood to play with some colourful eyeshadows, I created a warm berry-toned eye look with dramatic winged eyeliner.

Products used:

  • Revolution Ultra Cover and Conceal Palette in Light-Medium
  • H&M LE Tuscan Escape palette
  • Revolution Tasty Chilli shadow palette
  • Catrice Absolute Eye Colour 420 Talk Like An Egyptian
  • Wycon Ink Liner
  • random black pencil liner
  • Rival Loves Me Volume Wonder mascara in Black

♥ how to create the eyeshadow lewk ♥

1. I filled in my brows with matte chocolate eyeshadow and cleaned up around them with some concealer. Then I primed my eyelids with skin-toned concealer and patted a matte cream eyeshadow beneath the brows to highlight the brow bones and make eyeshadow blending process a whole lotta easier.

2. Next, I blended a light pink shade in the crease and the lower lashline using a dense, yet fluffy blending brush. I used a shade called Capsicum; after application it looks more red than pink which works well for looks like this one.

3. I dipped a small and dense blending brush in a dark red shimmer from the H&M palette, and generously applied it on the outer parts of my lids. Blend the edges to ensure there are no harsh lines, and feel free to extend the colour out in a winged shape like I did.

4. I’m still testing out the Revolution Tasty Chilli palette, and since I hadn’t yet tried the dark purple shimmer called XXXtra Hot, I decided to try it today. Once I had applied it on the bare parts of my lids, it looked lighter and more metallic than I expected. I wanted to add more purple tones to the look, so I patted a matte neon purple called Cheeky on the middle of the lid. It got covered with eyeshadow topper so it’s not necessary, but I still wanted to mention it.

5. I’m trying to finish off a gold glitter eyeshadow topper, so I applied it all over my lid to both lighten the look and use up some product. I used a pencil brush that I spritzed with some setting spray to make sure the glitter doesn’t fall all over my cheeks.

6. Last, but not least, I applied black pencil liner in the waterline, drew on massive wings, and applied two coats of mascara on both top and bottom lashes. In the end I also deepened the lower lash line with some matte chocolate eyeshadow, but I skipped lashes as they feel uncomfortable when I’m wearing glasses.

#QOTD: Do you like movie remakes? Honestly, I think many remakes aren’t as good as the originals, though sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised.  Leave your thoughts in a comment down below, I’d love to hear what you think!

  1. I liked the 1985 film (I saw it ages ago), but I didn’t know there is a Collin Farrell remake for it. I will have to watch that.

Your eye look is really pretty. It looks a bit more berry toned than purple, I also would have thought that “Xxxtra Hot” is darker than it applied for you. I was actually eyeing the Tasty Chilli palette before passing on it 😃

    • I’m happy I was able to give you a fun movie recommendation!
I honestly didn’t expect much from the remake, and I’m glad I was proven wrong.
And I also thought that XXXtra hot shade would be much darker, but I honestly like that it’s not nearly black like some other dark shimmers tend to be. It’s a good palette, though the metallic shimmers are a bit too creamy and tend to collect in the eyelid creases.
