I PUT A SPELL ON YOU // warm red eyeshadow look

Hey!

The spellbinding look I created today was inspired by I Put A Spell On You, one of the most popular Halloween songs ever made. I plan to share a few more song-inspired makeup looks throughout October; right now I want to create something inspired by Superstition and Bad Moon Rising, but I’m open for suggestions. Also, the next eyeshadow looks will be bolder and spookier, but I wonder if this is the right post format I should use going forward, so feel free to leave your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions in a comment below!

I PUT A SPELL ON YOU

I Put A Spell On You is one of my favourite songs and I love to sing along every time I hear it! My two favourite versions come from Annie Lenoux and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins aka the man who wrote it; Hawkins’s original is a Halloween party staple, while Annie Lenoux’s cover is perfect for night drives!

Products used:

  • Rival Loves Me Brow Mascara in 01 Ash Blond
  • random bronze eyeshadow stick (as eyeshadow base)
  • H&M LE Tuscan Escape palette (matte cream and taupe shades)
  • I Heart Revolution Tasty Chilli Eyeshadow palette
  • Gosh Catchy Eyes Drama mascara

PICTORIAL with descriptions

Today I’m trying out a new pictorial format, in which I offer you rather detailed descriptions of the steps I took to create this look. I have yet to find the best way to make these posts so I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions in the comments below!

1. Do your eyebrows and prime the lids.

I filled the tails of my brows with a bit of taupe eyeshadow, then applied two coats of brow mascara. Once the brows were done, I applied a bit of matte cream colour beneath the brows to highlight the brow bones, and applied cream eyeshadow on the lids to prime them for further eyeshadow.

2. Apply the first lid shade!

(From now on, all eyeshadows I’m using for this look come from the Revolution palette.) The first eyeshadow I used is Pepper, and I blended it in my crease using a dense blending brush. It looks cool-toned in the palette but it turns into a mid-tone mustard as soon as you begin applying it.

3. Add the lid colour.

I took a dense blending brush and applied a rich red colour called Cayenne on most of my lid, avoiding the middle part where I will apply the shimmers. I also used a fluffy blending brush to blend some of the colour in the crease!

4. If necessary, deepen the lid shade.

I wasn’t happy with the depth of the previous shade, so I tapped a small barrel brush in the dark red colour, Flames, and patted it on the inner and outer corners of my eyelids. I didn’t really blend it outwards as I didn’t want to create a smoky eye, but I still tried to make the transition between the shades as seamless as possible. However, this step is completely optional and depends on the eyeshadows you are using, as well as the look you are going for.

5. Glam it up!

Apply a burnt red shimmer on the middle of the lid; depending on the shadow formula use a flat brush or your fingertips to do that. I used the shade called Flakes as it seamlessly blended in with the matte shadows I had placed on the lid, and I applied it using my fingertip because Revolution metallic shimmers work best that way.

6. Final touches.

This step is totally optional, though I feel like it adds a nice little touch to the overall look. I dipped a tiny brush in Contest and applied it right in the middle of the dark red shimmer, as well as on the inner parts of my bottom lids. After that was done, I applied a few coats of mascara on my top and bottom lashes, and finished the rest of my makeup!

FINISHED LOOK

Although I wore these eyeshadows as shown in the photos down below, you could totally add some eyeliner and fake lashes to look extra dramatic. Overall, I believe this makeup fits I Put A Spell On You quite well, and you should be careful not to put others under your spell if you decide to recreate it! 🙂

QOTD: What colours do you gravitate towards when doing your makeup? I’m partial to warm tones as they look best on my skin so I enjoy working with yellow, red, and orange colours. Leave your answer in the comments down below, I’d love to hear it! ♥

Until later,

  1. Oh this is really pretty! I only like warm toned eyeshadows on myself, so this is right up my alley. Oranges, warm browns, gold and bronze colors are usually my go to-s.

I’m not the very best at eyeshadow application, during the week I mainly stick to using only two colors at once. Anything more complicated and there is a chance I’ll mess it up 😀
So this tutorial is actually very helpful for me, and thank you for including step by step pictures, they’re very useful.

    • I’m glad to have inspired your makeup adventures. 💕 This look seems more complicated than it is, and I’m sure you’ll be able to create something lovely yourself!
